UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF SUPPLY CHAIN RESILIENCE

Introduction:

Understanding the concept of supply chain resilience presents an integrated perspective on resilience through extensive research work and literature review with practical implication of risk management and supply chain management. It also purposes the empirical research into the supply chain resilience. This paper has much relevance to our course of study, as it provides the theoretical insight of conceptual model for understanding the concept of resilience through touching various other disciplines such as developmental psychology, ecosystem, supply chain, and risk management.

Summary:

This research paper is an integrative literature review undertaken to define the resilience supply chain that has already been defined by a number of scholars. However, this review tries to establish the basis for the development of a conceptual model and framework for further research work.

The essence of multidimensional and multidisciplinary resilience supply chain is that it must be designed to incorporate the event readiness, provide an efficient and effective response to unforeseen disruptions, inherent to supply chain conduct and be able to recover to the original state or even better.

Understanding the concept of supply chain resilience can be studied and applied in development psychology, ecosystems as scientific research and emerging disciplines of risk management and supply chain management. Similarly, the author defines and explains the concept of resilience from various disciplines and perspectives such as ecological, social psychological, economic, organizational, emergency and sustainable development and supply chain risk management.

As the concept of supply chain resilience is a multidimensional phenomenon and relatively a new in the dimension of supply chain and risk management, it was defined using its multidisciplinary perspective such as:

“The adaptive capabilities of the supply chain to prepare for unexpected events, respond to disruptions, and recover from them by maintaining continuity of operations at the desired level of connectedness and control over structure and function.”

Later on in this paper, the author discovers and links this concept with the logistics capabilities and competitive advantage. According to the resource-based view (RBV), firms can achieve a sustainable competitive advantage through the dynamic integration of logistics capabilities resulting in supply chain resilience. However, this paper doesn’t through in-depth insights into this relationship between logistics capabilities and supply chain resilience.

In short, there are abundant opportunities for further research especially further conceptualization using a different perspective. Moreover, the knowledge-based theory can also be used to develop the learning perspective of supply chain resilience. In addition, this study identifies shortcomings in the literature and further purposes a framework to address the existing gaps.

Conclusion:

Understanding the concept of supply chain resilience has touched the existing body of knowledge by presenting the synopsis of various existing perspectives on the phenomena of resilience, especially with an in-depth focus on supply chain resilience. Further, this research asks for testing of the proposed model empirically and understanding of the concept through a quantitative approach.
